The Surprising Japanese Skincare Trend That Makes You Look 10 Years Younger

K-beauty, shorthand for Korean beauty, has been trending in the United States for some time now. The concept is well-known for its multi-step approach, which typically consists of ten phases each night.

Many of the most popular beauty fads of the past few years—including the glass, dumpling, and honey skin—can trace their origins to Korea.

Japanese beauty, sometimes known as J-beauty, is known for its understated elegance. Its emphasis on hydration and natural-leaning components mirrors Korean beauty, but its core features differ.

Take the following as a primer on Japanese beauty, courtesy of Shik Beauty Collective's master esthetician, Kyoko Getz:

Barrier support is crucial, for one.

"Japanese skincare focuses on skin's barrier function and TEWL (transepidermal water loss)," says Getz. "These are the vital aspects of the skin's overall health and well-being."

According to Getz, a damaged skin barrier can cause dryness, irritation, eczema, acne, accentuated fine lines, and other symptoms. J-beauty aims to treat multiple skin issues simultaneously, prioritizing mild, moisturizing solutions over ones that might dry out the skin.

"Gentle cleansing, nourishment (both inside and out), hydration, moisture, and protection are the crucial steps to achieve a healthy skin barrier," according to her.

Many J-beauty products, including the Nemohamo Full Barrier Serum and the Seiso J-Beauty Pure Ceramide Concentrate, are recommended by her. These products contain compounds like ceramides, squalane, glycerin, and more, meant to soothe your skin barrier.

Properly-rounded diet

The foundation of the J-beauty philosophy is an inward focus, as Getz alluded to before. Healthy, glowing skin is a side effect of a well-nourished body.

"They're full of probiotics, vitamins, and enzymes," she explains, which can improve immune function and gut health (all of which are crucial to one's appearance in the mirror).

Not only for produce but also for other foods, Getz highlights the significance of eating with the seasons in Japanese culture. She argues that fresh foods are valued in part because popular and available fish fluctuate with the seasons.

Since Getz's family originated in Uji, Japan (the city considered the home of the Japanese tea ritual), she "can't forget to mention" the importance of green tea. Drinking green tea can improve skin health, according to clinical studies.

This effect is only one of green tea's many purported health advantages. Given that tea has natural anti-inflammatory compounds and a lot of vitamin C, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Cutting-edge engineering

Finally, we have high-tech tools. "When it comes to Japanese skin care, advanced technologies and innovations are a huge part of it all," says Getz.

Getz's brand, Olura, is only one example of the many well-liked at-home skin care gadgets available in Japan. The Olura Eno, a vibrating portable device, exemplifies the ideals of J-beauty technology, which include minimalistic designs with various benefits and clinical efficacy, such as helping to exfoliate dead skin cells and increase the absorption of topical serums and treatments.

But J-beauty isn't just about the gadgets; it also features cutting-edge skin care products. Getz cites the Japanese skincare brand Nemohamo as an example of a company that uses low-temperature vacuum extraction to incorporate whole plants into its products.

Panax ginseng is the star plant of this particular product line. This cutting-edge extraction technology keeps the enzymes, vitamins, and minerals found in ginseng intact and easily accessible.

This aspect is a crucial part of Japanese beauty, though we recognize it is also present in other natural-leaning companies.

Bottom line

Supporting the skin's natural barrier, eating a healthy diet rich in fresh vegetables and seafood, and using cutting-edge technology in products and devices are the cornerstones of Japanese beauty.
